If something happens: five steps

  1. Get help. For injury or acute illness call 1669, for an accident or robbery 191. For fraud, theft or disputes with locals call the tourist police on 1155, they speak English.
  2. Call your insurer. Call the emergency number of your travel health insurance before you are admitted as an inpatient. The insurer arranges cost coverage with the clinic. Without a guarantee of payment, the hospital may ask for a deposit.
  3. Have your passport and policy number ready. Keep your passport and your insurance number to hand. Photos of them on your phone help if your passport is at the hotel.
  4. Keep records. After a theft or accident, get a report from the police, insurers usually ask for it. Keep medical reports, invoices and payment receipts.
  5. Inform the embassy. If you lose your passport, are arrested, seriously injured or someone dies, contact the embassy in Bangkok. Outside office hours, use the standby number.

There is no single number for everything. You call an ambulance on 1669, the police on 191, the fire brigade on 199. You can reach the tourist police on 1155, they speak English.

Who helps me if my passport is gone?

The embassy in Bangkok. Otherwise it only accepts applications by appointment, but in the case of a lost passport and an urgent return to Germany also without one.

Is there a German consul in Hua Hin or on Koh Samui?

No. There are honorary consuls only in Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket. The honorary consul in Phuket is responsible for Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the embassy in Bangkok for Hua Hin.

Where do I get help fastest as a tourist?

For fraud, theft or disputes with locals, from the tourist police, 1155. For injury or illness, on 1669.

Do I have to pay in advance at the hospital?

That depends on the clinic and your insurance. Call your insurer before you are admitted, it arranges cost coverage directly with the hospital. Without a guarantee of payment, a deposit may be required.
