Pai is a small town in a valley in the mountains of Mae Hong Son province, in north-western Thailand. It used to attract mainly backpackers, but today many people see Pai as the relaxed counterpart to Chiang Mai: rice fields, hills, waterfalls, hot springs and a big market in the evening. The town itself is small, and most of the sights are in the surrounding area.

Getting there is the catch: a long mountain road with a great many bends leads to Pai. If you know that and prepare, you will arrive in good shape.

Getting there

Most people take the minivan from Chiang Mai. The vans leave from the Arcade bus station (Terminal 2), the journey takes three to four and a half hours and costs 150 to 350 baht. Prempracha runs almost every hour, and Aya Service will also pick you up at your hotel. Book two or three days in advance.

Route 1095 is 130 to 140 kilometres long and crosses the mountains. People often mention 762 bends. The surface is mostly good, but the ride turns many people’s stomachs. A private car costs 2,200 to 3,800 baht and stops wherever you like.

There are currently no flights to Pai. A planned service with small aircraft was cancelled again in August 2026.

Getting around

You can walk around the town centre. For excursions many people rent a scooter, for 150 to 200 baht a day. But there are many accidents involving tourists, often inexperienced riders. Without a motorcycle licence the insurance usually does not pay; there is more in the guide Riding a scooter in Thailand.

A day tour is more comfortable. A shared tour costs 400 to 700 baht, a private car with a driver 1,200 to 2,000 baht a day. Grab is available, but there are few drivers.

Where to stay

Right in town on Walking Street is convenient, but loud in the evening. It is quieter on the other side of the river, and you can still walk to the centre across the bamboo bridges. In the rice fields around the town there are many bungalows, and on the hillside resorts with a pool. The Pai Village Boutique Resort is well placed in the centre by the river.

In the cool season it gets chilly at night. Ask for blankets or a room with a hot shower.

Sights

Pai Canyon

The canyon is about eight kilometres to the south and has no entry fee. Narrow ridges of red clay run between deep gullies, and there are no railings. For sunset it is best to be there by 4:30 pm. Wear sturdy shoes instead of flip-flops.

Hot springs

The Tha Pai hot springs are about eight kilometres to the south in Huai Nam Dang National Park and cost 300 baht for foreigners. The Sai Ngam springs, about 16 kilometres to the north, cost 200 baht. Both are open from 8 am to 5 pm.

Boon Ko Ku So bamboo bridge

The bamboo bridge, about 800 metres long, leads through the rice fields to the forest temple Wat Tham Pa Phu Kon. Entry costs 20 to 30 baht. For the temple, cover your shoulders and knees.

Yun Lai viewpoint and Chinese village

At the Yun Lai viewpoint there is often mist in the valley in the morning. For sunrise you need to be there before 6 am, entry costs 20 to 30 baht, and a cup of tea is included. Right next to it is Santichon, a village of Chinese from Yunnan province, with tea tasting and Yunnan cuisine.

Waterfalls and White Buddha

At the Mo Paeng waterfall, about ten kilometres to the west, many people slide down the smooth rocks. The falls carry the most water from July to December. To reach the White Buddha at Wat Phra That Mae Yen you climb about 350 steps and look out over the whole valley.

Memorial Bridge and Tham Lod

Just before Pai stands the old iron Memorial Bridge, a popular photo stop. For a day trip, the Tham Lod cave, about 50 kilometres away, is worth it, and you explore it with a guide. The bamboo raft only runs when the water is low enough, roughly from December to July.

Food

In the evening the best place to eat is Walking Street, where dishes cost 40 to 100 baht. Try khao soi, the curry noodle soup of the north. Charlie & Lek and Na’s Kitchen are good for Thai food, and OM Garden Cafe for breakfast. If you want to learn to cook yourself, a course costs 800 to 1,200 baht.

Evenings

Walking Street is closed to cars from about 18:00 to 22:00 and is full of stalls. After that you can head to one of the small bars with live music; Jazz House is a well-known one. Many people meet at Two Huts for sunset.

Tips for travellers over 50

A seat at the front and a travel sickness tablet before departure help against the bends. A private car with breaks is gentler than the full minivan.

In March and April, sometimes into May, the air in Pai is often bad. In spring 2026 the particulate level was several times the World Health Organization guideline value for days. If you have respiratory or heart problems, you are better off travelling between November and February. You can find the current readings at the World Air Quality Index or at Air4Thai.

In December and January nights only reach about 10 to 12 degrees. Bring a warm jacket.

There are no railings at Pai Canyon, and after rain the clay becomes slippery. In that case stay on the wide paths or skip it.

In the rainy season there can be floods and landslides. In September 2026 the authorities issued a warning for five districts of the province, and Pai was not among them. Quickly check the situation before you set off.

Best time to visit

It is nicest from November to February: dry, warm by day and cool at night. In March and April there is often smoke from field fires in the air. It rains from June to October and the paths get slippery, but everything is green. You can see the monthly values on the weather page for Pai.

Pai combines best with Chiang Mai. What you need before you fly is in Entering Thailand in 2026.
