According to the Thai government, the country has three seasons. From mid-February to mid-May it is hot, from mid-May to mid-October it is the rainy season, and from mid-October to mid-February it is cooler and drier. In Bangkok the most rain falls in September, around 334 millimetres. In the north the nights get properly chilly in winter: in Chiang Mai they drop to an average of 15 °C, in Umphang on the border with Myanmar even to 12 °C.

In the south you need to watch the coast. On the Andaman Sea with Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak, it rains most from May to October, in Phuket around 361 millimetres in September. On the Gulf coast with Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the heaviest rain only comes at the end of the year, on Koh Samui in November with around 507 millimetres. That is why in July and August the Gulf is usually drier than the Andaman Sea. From December to March, on the other hand, the Andaman Sea is driest.
