What has changed since the last warning

The warning of 18 October ran until 25 October. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) published its new weekly forecast today, 22 October, and it reaches three days further: from 22 to 28 October there will be continuous rain in the south, locally heavy to very heavy. A monsoon trough lies over the central south.

In the rest of the country the thunderstorms are less persistent. From 22 to 24 October thunderstorms with gale-force gusts move across the north, the centre and the northeast, and there is another warning for 25 and 26 October. For Bangkok and the surrounding area, scattered thunderstorms with gusts are forecast today, with 25 to 27 degrees at night and 33 to 36 degrees by day.

Higher waves in the Andaman Sea

From 24 to 27 October a low over the upper Bay of Bengal strengthens. Wind and waves in the Andaman Sea increase as a result. In the upper part the waves are about two metres high, and higher in thunderstorms. Already today there are waves of more than two metres in thunderstorm areas in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Ships in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea are advised to keep clear of thunderstorms and to sail with caution. I think it is quite possible that individual ferries or boat trips will be cancelled as a result, especially speedboats. No specific cancellations have been announced so far.

What you should do now

If you have booked a ferry or a boat trip in the south between 24 and 27 October, ask the provider the evening before whether it is running. It is better to allow a spare day before a flight.

Prolonged rain brings a risk of flash floods, flooding and landslides in the south, especially on slopes at the foot of the mountains and near watercourses. Avoid such places, above all waterfalls and riverbanks. In an emergency you can reach the disaster prevention service on 1784 and the tourist police on 1155.

You can find ferry routes and journey times in the island hopping planner, and which region is dry when in the guide Best time to visit Thailand. The situation in central Thailand is covered in the report Floods in central Thailand and Bangkok. This replaces the earlier warning: Heavy rain until 25 October.
