The situation on 12 October
There was heavy rain in the last week of September. This was followed by flooding, landslides and road closures, mainly in central and eastern Thailand and also in Bangkok.
On 12 October (as of 6 am), around 2.46 million people in 908,595 households were still affected, spread across 20 provinces and Bangkok. The cause is continuing, at times very heavy rain and water still flowing down from the north into the rivers of the central region.
In Bangkok, 329,000 households were affected that day, but the water there was already receding. It also went down in Ayutthaya, Nakhon Sawan, Samut Prakan, Prachin Buri and Chachoengsao. In Pathum Thani, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom and Nakhon Nayok the situation remained stable. In Phitsanulok and Phetchaburi, on the other hand, the water was still rising.
24 deaths were reported in Prachin Buri alone and four in Bangkok (as of 12 October).
Much may have changed since then. For up-to-date figures, call the DDPM disaster prevention authority on its hotline 1784.
Update: A new heavy rain warning has been issued for 18 to 25 October. More on this in the article Weather warning until 25 October.
If you are heading to the middle of the country
Before a day trip to Ayutthaya or a journey east, check the current situation there.
Avoid affected areas, do not walk or drive through flooded streets, and follow warnings from the local authorities.
In an emergency you can reach the disaster prevention authority on 1784 and the tourist police on 1155. I would save both numbers to my phone.
The rainy season lasts from May to October. When each region dries out is covered in the guide Best time to visit Thailand.
